Liberia’s wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate. Areas like the mangroves and swamps are being used as dumping sites. Wetlands protect and improve water quality, store floodwaters, maintain surface water flow during dry season and help moderate global climate conditions.
According to 2023 flood report by IFRC, flooding affected 1,556 and displaced about 119 persons in Monrovia and adjacent communities in Grand Cape Mount County. Those affected were mostly people living in wetlands, swamps and low flood plains in the slums of Monrovia and Robertsport.
These numbers threaten to increase if collective climate actions are not taken. More communities are in danger of experiencing floods in Liberia with heavier rainfall due to climate change.
We must act now!!!!!!!
