Coastal Heroes: How Wetlands Shield Us from Climate Change

In the face of rising sea levels, coastal wetlands act as a crucial buffer, reducing the impact of erosion, flooding, and storms. The intricate root systems of mangroves bind the shoreline, offering significant resistance against erosion. These coastal ecosystems, therefore, increase our resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Despite their vital importance, particularly in the face of Liberia’s rising climate crisis, our wetlands are being threatened by conversion into residential areas, used as dump sites, and subjected to logging. These actions to deplete the mangrove ecosystem disproportionately harm the most vulnerable members of society, including women, children, and people with disabilities. The adverse impacts include reduced livelihood opportunities, increased vulnerability to food insecurity, limited access to clean water, and a loss of traditional medicine.

📣 Actions need to be taken to be taken to ensure the continued health of these vital ecosystems and safeguard the wellbeing of our communities.
